Conference | Indian Women in the city of Buenos Aires: subjections and resistances (18th-19th centuries)

2020-02-12

|

Conferences and Seminars

The conference "Indian Women in the city of Buenos Aires: subjections and resistances (18th-19th centuries)", by Jacqueline Sarmiento (UNLP), will take place on March 4th, 2:30 p.m.,  at ISCTE-IUL – Room C202 – Ed. II, 2nd floor. Free admission.

Since mid-18th century, the city of Buenos Aires had an important growth. Its peculiar border condition gave it a particular character to the relations with the different indigenous groups. In this conference, it is proposed the analysis of the social place of Indian women in Buenos Aires between the 1750s and early 19th century, the forms of subjection to which they were exposed and the resistances that they were able to put into practice. Will be presented in-depth the case study of the Collection House of Buenos Aires. On one hand, it is important to observe how the Indians arrived at that place of reclusion; hence, two distinct behaviours can be identified: the escape from the House and the resistance to leaving the place. What forms of resistance can be identified in these cases? The sources speak of resistance to service. However, the stay in the House can be presented as a choice, but also implied service and reclusion. Finally, are these individual forms of resistance? Or do they imply, in some way, joint actions?

Jacqueline Sarmiento has a degree in Anthropology (UNLP, 2009) and a Ph.D. in History (UNLP, 2016). Teacher and Chair of American History I (FaHCE, UNLP), she did postdoctoral internships in Brazil (UFF) and Mexico (ENAH). Co-author of the “Chair Book Undressing the Eurocentric view. Categories under tension in American history”, coordinated by Emir Reitano and published by the Editorial of the National University of La Plata (2017). Participates in the research projects “Sociocultural processes and construction of new identities in the area of the Río de La Plata and Brazil. Seminar "Practices and resistances of a polyphonic institution. Poverty, Charity and Assistance in the Hospital of Santa Creu. Barcelona, XVth Century

2019-07-31

|

Conferences and Seminars

The seminar "Practices and resistances of a polyphonic institution. Poverty, Charity and Assistance in the Hospital of Santa Creu. Barcelona, XVth Century" by RESISTANC E's researcher Ximena Illanes (PUC) took place on July 30, at MPIeR.

In April of the year 1401, the Hospital de la Santa Creu was inaugurated in Barcelona. The ecclesiastical and civil authorities saw with pride the realization of this project, since it had been for a while that this was considered a "public" and urgent need for the city. The Papacy and Martin de Aragón supported the initiative, offering various privileges for the institution in order to increase resources. The particularity of this institution is that it combined all the existing hospitals, configuring itself as the only one in the city, where there were different sections for the sick, poor, abandoned children, mad people, among others. The hospital
then was configured as an autonomous and mixed entity. It was organized between the councillors of the city and the canons of the cathedral.

The aim of this presentation was to measure the polyphony of the first general hospital in the Iberian Peninsula. The peculiarity of this study is that this institution is configured as a microcosm of the city itself and also as an open window to understand the complex concepts of poverty, charity and assistance. More specifically, the documentary wealth preserved in the Archive of the Hospital of Santa Creu and Sant Pau and the Historical Archive of the Library of Catalonia makes it possible to understand the practices and resistances of the population residing in the hospital, adapting to the norms or establishing alternative and solidary strategies.

Conference "Petitions in the Age of Atlantic Revolutions (c.1760-c.1840)" - February 13th to 15th

2019-02-26

|

Conferences and Seminars

The Institute of Social Sciences, with the support of RESISTANCE, hosted more than fifty researchers from around the world for an International Congress that revisited one of the most important instruments of representation in modern democracies: petitions and petitionary movements. In a sense, the subject could not be more relevant for the times we are living in. But, at the same time, petitioning was a distinctive mark of the Early Modern world. Petitions, representations, appeals and other similar documents were used, either individually or collectively by those who wished to address the Crown, or other authorities. As a form of political or juridical communication, petitions go back to the Classical Era, but gained a broader geographical expression during the European expansion, when they became one of the most popular means used by overseas populations to convey their interests and grievances.

During the “Era of Revolutions” petitions also provided a key element of continuity between the Early Modern and Contemporary worlds in the sense that, unlike many other features and political devices from the Ancien Régime, they survived the massive political transformation. In this event we focused on the role played by petitions precisely during this time of intense social upheaval; a time that also saw the widening of political rights in Europe and the Americas.

How does historical conceptions about slavery relate to current debates on contemporary slavery? RESISTANCE's researcher Mariana Dias Paes (MPIeR) analyzed criminal lawsuits sued before the Brazilian Tribunais Regionais Federais to analyze how judges’ conceptions on colonial and nineteenth-century slavery determined their framing of the legal concept of “contemporary slave labor”. |

Conferences and Seminars

On 29 November 2018, in the seminar cycle “New Perspectives on Early Modern History”, a roundtable took place on the much-debated topic of the musealization of the Discoveries. Organized by José Vicente Serrão, the leader of RESISTANCE’s ISCTE-IUL team, the guest-speakers were also two members of our project: Ângela Barreto Xavier, team leader of ICS-ULisboa, and Filipe Themudo Barata, member of UÉvora’s team. With the room full of scholars and students, including some researchers of the project RESISTANCE, the roundtable set out to discuss a topic that has been at the centre of a heated public debate, and was the opportunity to reflect upon the many complexities involved in the controversial creation of a Museum of the Discoveries, in Lisbon: the pertinence of the museum itself, the symbolic weight of the word “discoveries", the place of historians in the public sphere, the many mythologies of national histories, as well as alternative names and concepts to such a museum.
