Conference | Indian Women in the city of Buenos Aires: subjections and resistances (18th-19th centuries)

The conference "Indian Women in the city of Buenos Aires: subjections and resistances (18th-19th centuries)", by Jacqueline Sarmiento (UNLP), will take place on March 4th, 2:30 p.m.,  at ISCTE-IUL – Room C202 – Ed. II, 2nd floor. Free admission.

Since mid-18th century, the city of Buenos Aires had an important growth. Its peculiar border condition gave it a particular character to the relations with the different indigenous groups. In this conference, it is proposed the analysis of the social place of Indian women in Buenos Aires between the 1750s and early 19th century, the forms of subjection to which they were exposed and the resistances that they were able to put into practice. Will be presented in-depth the case study of the Collection House of Buenos Aires. On one hand, it is important to observe how the Indians arrived at that place of reclusion; hence, two distinct behaviours can be identified: the escape from the House and the resistance to leaving the place. What forms of resistance can be identified in these cases? The sources speak of resistance to service. However, the stay in the House can be presented as a choice, but also implied service and reclusion. Finally, are these individual forms of resistance? Or do they imply, in some way, joint actions?
