Roundtable “A musealização do tema Descobrimentos”, ISCTE-IUL, 29 November 2018

On 29 November 2018, in the seminar cycle “New Perspectives on Early Modern History”, a roundtable took place on the much-debated topic of the musealization of the Discoveries. Organized by José Vicente Serrão, the leader of RESISTANCE’s ISCTE-IUL team, the guest-speakers were also two members of our project: Ângela Barreto Xavier, team leader of ICS-ULisboa, and Filipe Themudo Barata, member of UÉvora’s team. With the room full of scholars and students, including some researchers of the project RESISTANCE, the roundtable set out to discuss a topic that has been at the centre of a heated public debate, and was the opportunity to reflect upon the many complexities involved in the controversial creation of a Museum of the Discoveries, in Lisbon: the pertinence of the museum itself, the symbolic weight of the word “discoveries", the place of historians in the public sphere, the many mythologies of national histories, as well as alternative names and concepts to such a museum.
